SALES EXECUTIVE REPORT

INTRODUCTION

CONSTRAINTS

Leaving the family for many months is the weight but also be more severe if we were late into the life of rah-rah.

Many of us who was a senior in terms of age, but due to the urgent needs and economic uncertainty in the country, they continue to hold to work until retirement. Deep in their hearts a desire to stop and try to live in their own country, what business either. But many of them hit a thick wall to be living at home. Open limited efforts try often fail and finally back to the ship. Our biggest mistake when trying to live on land is the lack of information and business opportunities in the ship's old habits that made us spoiled. In forming business, a clear need tips and strategies planned and that we defeat when a try. We were like deer in the village even though we have the capital but did not have much information. Once entered the world cruises, we seemed to enter into a vicious circle.
Waitrees Holland America Line Prism of our senior, I finally decided to end my life in the world cruises. Heavy indeed. To be honest working on cruise ships is good that can make us complacent. All of our needs because the company guaranteed us pamper. Our salaries are not huge, but we receive tips from guests who are far greater than the salary. Tips from the amount of money rather than working in Jakarta at last we can save. But money is not everything because most of us give up something far more valuable; parents, wife, son, boyfriend, close friends, relatives, everything we had just met in a short time. The price is quite expensive, we have to pay when working on cruise ships.

With a heavy heart and should be ready with all the risks I face when out of that environment, I was finally able to close the pages of my life on a cruise ship. I returned to college and finish college in a far different world of hospitality. Now all of living memory. My great desire to return but not as a crew. Someday ... .. I hope so.

Over time, adaptation can walk. culture shock still often occur as a result of interaction of different cultures, both when working and when we were on the ground when off. The most simple example is our habit to cross the street. Now, if among us who are 10 years (120 months) to work, means that only about 20 months for the family. Pathetic! Imagine if you have a child 10 years old, you are just chatting with him for 2 years. The rest we can only communicate through the media such as telephone, letter and e-mail. The price is quite expensive to be paid when we work place it. All that may not be so tasteless for those who are unmarried but when walking, and a single moment like anyone who would decide to get married and have a family. Another story if it does not have a plan for it and be quite happy to get her out as a partner to live or even if you have like same-sex orientation. Celebrations such as Ramadan, Lebaran, natalan, nyepi, perayan Galungan and celebrations that the family moments together into a luxury. We rarely lucky to celebrate at home with family.
You can still career on cruise ships as well. At Holland America Line, a lot of people we've reached a good level manager in the dining room, housekeeping, accounting and warehouse. Not to mention the level of Asst. managers and supervisors who are even more. You dare to look, look pretty, especially if you are not ashamed to be a sycophant or even willing to sacrifice themselves for the Hotel Manager who is much like the same-sex oriented, then your career could be shot like a meteor. While certainly more of us who preferred to achieve a way to fight hard through performance.

Referring to hierachy of Maslow's needs it, we are no longer at the level of basic need. We were young age with a dollar in his wallet, then we become more consumerist. All purchased are branded goods. of goods for the tip to toe. We prefer to be slaves of fashion, we have an expensive camera, though we are not lovers of photography, the hours we have to cool as the hours are advertised in GQ magazine, we also have perfume fragrance class so that all are aware of our presence is the smell, sound system, we must be booming what the hell neighbors suffer a heart attack and can make tiles in the house down. Anyway, many of us to be impulsive buyer. When he came home we had to buy a car or a nice house though only for a moment. Girlfriend or wife we also have above average for Indonesia because the standard size used is the usual beauty we see out there though ironically in a matter of months we had to leave for a job.

This part, I will explain the next step of interview, as I was asked to go to Cikarang for further test.
It was too early as I reached MS Nieuw (The building name), so I waited in the car and just look around the building where I will spend my 10 weeks training if I completed my tests and get a result of pass of course. The building was divided by 2 parts which is a dormitory on the left, and classrooms, offices, and trainee canteen on the right. It was 8 A.M as I entered the gate and asked the security where the training room is. They took my ID card and give me a visitor card. I walked in the pathway, and entered a big hall, it was the training place. I saw a lot of trainees there. Some of them were using black and white with bow tie, some of them not using bow ties. At last I found out that housekeeping trainees are not using bow tie, the one using bow tie are those trainees from Dining room or RSA (Room Service Attendant).

Walking through the hall, I saw a lot of class rooms with a sign on the door. There was a room named "Marcopolo". Some of the classes was designed to fit with actual working condition, for example a class with bath room and bed room for housekeeping. Some were designed to be look like a dining room to support the training session for dining room trainee and RSA trainee. All the rooms were equipped with nice lighting, good environment, and air conditioning as well as of course, desks and chairs. Most of trainee have short haircut, and I guess it's a must to have neat and short hair.

The formal test began as a person coming and entered the room. He welcame us and asked us to follow him to the room which at last I found out that it was the HR office. He explained what kind of tests we will face that day, and he gave us forms to fill in. It's actually a form which will be filled with our scored marks through out the tests and interview, and 2 pages of format for CV/resume.

The first test was only a conversation skill in English. This time the interviewer was a lady. She asked few questions about myself, for example where I am living, how old I am, what my parents do for living, how many brothers/sisters I have, how do I found out about HAL, why do I want to work in HAL, what do I know about HALL - Holland America Line Cruise Ship, etc. There were still a lot of questions she asked me, but one thing for sure to tell readers, don't wait until she asked you, try to expand your own story by yourself. When she asked about your family, tell her all, not only your parents or how many sisters/ brothers you have, but try to tell them more, such as where are your sisters/ brothers, how old are them, what do they do, and you are the oldest, youngest, or the 2nd, 3rd, etc. That's one of my tips for you readers.

Having finished from the first tests, the lady asked me, why did I choose to work as Housekeeping as my English is just too good to be Housekeeper. She suggested me to be a RSA, and I told her directly that I actually applied to be RSA but SBI put me under HK as perhaps they do not want to take a risk if let's say my English was terrible. After that she asked me to follow her to HR office and requested to upgrade my position to be RSA, the HR officer agreed with condition if I pass the RSA test.

The next test was the professional skill test. There was a list of question with a check mark for correct answers. I should have the minimum score to pass this test. The questions that I still remembered Recruitment process for HALL were:

- What are the methods of cooking of eggs? (Poached, boiled, scrambled, etc…)

- If a guest order a steak, what do we ask? (How do do you like it to be done, sir?)

- What are the criteria of a steak? (Very well done, well done, etc…)

- Name the type of cereals. (Cornflakes, coco puff, etc…)

- Name the type of breakfast. (American, Continental)

- What is American breakfast, example?

- What is Continental breakfast, example?

- Name the type of soups, example?

After that he gave me pictures and asked me to name it, few are poached egg, boiled egg, scrambled egg, etc. I have to differentiate between tenderloin and sirloin from the pictures as well.

Well, I passed the test even though it's not a good result as I have no full time experience as I am a fresh graduate in INternational Hotel management school, not operation.

The next step was the last test for that day, it was a computerized English test. This test can be very difficult to those who are not good in written or grammar. Before I started my test, I have to pay a sum of money about Rp.45.000 if I am not mistaken for the software copyright. There were about 90's questions that needed to answer in 1 hour. The question consists of listening (using headphone), which is odd, complete the sentence, option question, true or false question. As for readers information, the question is a bit hard if you are only a passive English speaker. One of the example of which is odd that I remembered and troubled me much was:

Which is odd?

1. Uncle
2. Son
3. Nephew
4. Niece

You might choose son is it? Well, it was wrong, the answer was Niece, because they were all male except niece. Hope this example won't scare you much as now you already knew the right answer. It was D. Well, you should have a minimum score to pass the test, and it depends on your position. As RSA, the minimum score is higher than HK.

(Story in English was written by Edi of Tantra which just passed the recruitment process in the HAL and would soon undergo training period, before working on cruise ships under the management of HAL. The story is quite detailed and long, so we were forced to part 3. Tulisan fixed we convey in English. If you are not able to understand the context of the story, then you have enough guts to make lump join cruises. Salam editor).

I'll start this information as what we all normally do when applying job, we submit our application.

You can click here to find out address of SBI, which is HAL's representative in Indonesia. After that, what we can do is just pray, pray again, or try to apply for another job in case we are not accepted. We just can not do anything due to this step, as they will call us when our application is accepted.

The first interview held at SBI's office which I've mentioned earlier. That morning, I prepared for everything that I needed in order to get the best results for the interview. When I reached SBI, there are some other applicants waiting in the waiting room, all of them came for many different purposes. Some of them are to be there for a visa or for a briefing. But some of them are the same with me, as a new applicant.

When I was called for an interview, I was a bit nervous, as it was my first job interview and I am so called Freezing after so long in the fully air-conditioned waiting room. Well, another room, this time, it's smaller, with 2 chairs separated by a desk, a tough guy sitting behind the desk, with papers and pen in front of him, and again ... the cool air conditioning. When I saying cool, it means very cold, as I get used to air-condition but not this one, it's just too cool for average people.

I entered the room and said "Good morning, morning, sir." But replied me with Indonesia, "Good morning Edy, please have a sit." Well, when he talked to me in Bahasa Indonesia, I was shocked at first, but after that I get used to it. I just needed to get off those "-bahasa Indonesian way of thinking" as I never speak Indonesian language in Indonesia before.

Next, he said "Ok, before we start our interview session, I will firstly ask you a question. Does all the information stated in your application to SBI are all the truth and no lies!" And of course I answered "Yes." Then after that, he explained that the interview session actually is just a starting session of the next steps, so it's not the real interview from HAL, it's actually a qualifying interview from SBI them self before we sent to have an interview or test from HAL .

In this session starting, the tough guy asked a few questions to test my Home. A few that I remembered are:

"Why do you want to work for HAL?"

"What do you know about THIS?"

"Where did you find out about HAL?"

"How do you Satisfy the management of HAL from the position you are applying?"

Then he asked me a little bit of skilled questions. At first I was applying as Room Service Attendant, but when they called me, I was offered in Housekeeping only. Well, I Decided to grab the chance to work in a cruise and think about what I am working later, that's why I attended the interview.

Some of the question regarding to Housekeeping position is how to set up a room (bed making) in theory. I explained to him, and after that, he open his files which contain some pictures. He showed me a picture, and asks me to describe the picture in details, short as long as meaningful. It was just a newspaper cut I guess. So worry nothing about this step.

And he told us that this step is the end. But we have to attend another test at Cikarang. He gave me a reference paper to be given to the lady at the front office. I can not remember her name, if I am not mistaken, she was Miss Christine.
